Principal aims

Research activities carried out within the A.R.T.S. laboratory (Laboratory for Advanced Research into Telecommunication Systems) focus on protocols and applications for Advanced Telecommunication Systems and Services. Since the founding of the laboratory, R&D activities have been carried out, typically in collaboration with national and international academic and industrial partners, along with technology transfer initiatives.


Research activities

Research activities of the laboratory span different topics and include: design of protocols and architectures for wireless networks (LTE/LTE-A cellular networks, Wi-Fi/mesh networks, satellite networks and HAPs/drones); 5G systems (Device-to-Device, Machine-to-Machine, Multicast & Broadcast communications); Internet of Things (Social Internet of Things, cloud platforms for IoT, narrowband-IoT, sensor networks, RFID systems); vehicular networks (solutions for cooperative and autonomous driving, vehicle-to-everything communications (V2X), platooning and tele-operated driving, innovative technologies: full-duplexing, millimeter wave and visible light communication); future Internet (information-centric networking, tactile Internet); softwarization and virtualization of networks and devices (software-defined networking, network function virtualization, network slicing), mobile cloud architectures (fog/edge computing, cloud federation, vehicular cloud).

Conducted research is applied in different technological contexts: Intelligent Transportation Systems, Logistics, Smart Cities, Infomobility, Building Automation, Smart Grid, Platforms for emergency management, Smart healthcare, Industry 4.0.

Outputs of the research are published in prestigious international journals with high impact factor, in the proceedings of the major international conferences, in international books and book chapters.

Research methodologies include theoretical studies and design of innovative protocols, algorithms and architectures, whose evaluation is performed through simulators, emulation tools, analytical models and optimization methods (including game theory), testing and prototyping. The laboratory is equipped with many facilities and cutting-edge equipment (reconfigurable wireless/mesh routers, OpenFlow switches, Arduino/Raspberry/Bitalino micro-controller systems, vehicular on-board and road-side units, RFID tags/readers, localization systems, highly-performing workstations for cloud computing applications, software-defined radio (SDR) modules, development kits for wireless sensor networks, cellular networks planning tools, workbenches equipped with power supplier, multimeter and oscilloscope devices, etc.).

Members of the laboratory have a consolidated experience in research projects funded through international (ESA, ASI, H2020 and previous EU programmes), national (PRIN, POR, FIRB), regional (POR) calls. They are also active in the international research community as tutorial/keynote speakers, organizers of workshops and special sessions in international conferences, editors/guest editors for international journals, evaluators of the EU commission and ASI.

Members of the laboratory have also contributed to the founding of SMARTS s.r.l., a spin-off of the University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria and innovative start-up in the ICT field.

The laboratory regularly hosts students, PhD and researchers of the Mediterranea University and from other Italian and foreign teams for stage, thesis, teaching and research activities.


International relationships

ARTS members participate in the research activities of the NetWorld2020 European Technology Platform, established from the merging of ISI (Integral Satcom Initiative) and Net!Works activities and closely related to the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) Association.

The team is involved in international scientific collaboration with many universities, research centers and industries. Collaboration encompasses joint participation to international research projects, to mobility actions with national (es. Cooperlink) and international fundings (e.g., DAAD), among which Erasmus+ and Erasmus+ Traineeship, for the exchange of students, PhD and faculty staff to conduct research activities, teaching and seminars.
