Objectives The course aims to finalize the chemical and physical culture acquired by the student in the preparatory courses and provide complementary notions, aimed at understanding the new technological processes for the preparation of polymeric semiconductor materials. The course aims to study the mechanisms that underlie the proper operation of the connection interfaces of electronic systems with biological systems. This knowledge is essential for proper development teaching and learning of the students who will be called to work in electronics and bioelectronics.
Programme 1. General:
Overview of materials and electronic technologies. Chemical bonds, physical links. The carbon atom -The crystal structure, the electronic properties, the hybridization of orbitals and their consequences. The semiconductors. Atoms donors and acceptors.

2. The polymeric materials:
General references to organic chemistry. Preparation methods, characteristics and reactivity of the polymers. The polymeric materials for the electronics. Molecules and polymers with electron systems -conjugated extended. Length of conjugation: ionization potential, electron affinity and HOMO-LUMO gap from ethylene to polyene. Conjugated conducting polymers: doping and applications. The charge transport, comparing metal conductors, conductive polymers and polymeric semiconductors.

Properties, Features and Applications

4. Fundamental properties of biological molecules:
The cell: structure and general properties. Electrical signals in the cells: neurons, the action potential, the membrane seen as an electrical system, the action potential as a mechanism of electrical conduction in the cells.

5. Interfacing of electronic devices with biological systems:
The interface bioelectronics: electrodes polarizing, non-polarizing, insulating interfaces , devices based on bioelectronic interfaces: ISFET, CHEMFET.
