FOUNDATIONS OF STATIC CONVERTERS FOR ELECTRICAL ENERGY

Objectives The course is aimed for completing the knowledge acquired in the basic courses of Electrical Engineering and Electrical Power Systems, by learning the basics of power electronic devices and of basic circuit configurations of static conversion of electrical energy, both at the generation and the utilization stage. The contents are strongly directed to the application and understanding of the role of power electronics in modern electrical applications.
Programme In the first part, characteristics of power electronic devices in the most widespread applications of medium and high power are considered: power diodes, SCR, BJT, GTO, IGBT …; the problem of power dissipation in these devices and the dimensioning of the relative heat exchangers is also addressed.
In the second part,the main circuit configurations for static convertion of electrical energy are presented and analyzed in detail. In particular, the following basic conversion schemes are analyzed:
AC/DC converters (rectifier): diode rectifiers with single and double half-wave center-tapped transformer, bridge single-phase, three-phase and six-phase; thyristor controlled rectifiers, single phase and three phase, even in the operation as an inverter (AC/DC converter ); dual converters (four-quadrant), single phase and three-phase.
In the third part, switching converters (rectifiers and inverters) are presented and analyzed in detail. In particular, single-phase and three-phase controlled rectifiers are considered (with non-symmetrical control, with symmetrical control and with PWM control, linear and sinusoidal). Single-phase and three-phase voltage source inverter (with sinusoidal PWM) are also considered.
In the last part, CC/CC switching converters are presented and analyzed. In particular, it addressed the study of the chopper and the circuit configuration of the Buck converter, of the Boost converter and of Buck-Boost converter. The study also addresses the problem of correct designing and sizing LC filters for the achievement of the desired input specifications.
