Objectives The VLSI (Very Large Scale of Integration) digital systems are the basis of the electronic applications that are used in everyday life, such as computers and peripherals, automotive, mobile phones, digital TV, high definition set-top boxes, DVD player and recorder, etc.. The course aims at introduce students to the design flow of VLSI electronic systems and wants to give special importance to the technological aspects that characterize the realization of VLSI systems nowadays. An example are the DSM (Deep Sub-Micron) effects, which introduce different physical problems compared to the technologies of the last century.

The module of VLSI provides a strong practical component which consists in carrying out a number of laboratory exercises based on the use of appropriate tools for simulation and circuit synthesis.
Programme SSI, MSI, VLSI and ULSI Systems. System on Chip (SoC). Digital circuit design: state of the art and prospective aspects. Standard cells design method. AMS libraries.
VLSI design flow. Introduction to VHDL. Examples of synthesizable VHDL code.
FPGA project. Circuit Netlist. Logic synthesis. Timing simulation.
Physical design: Floorplanning, Placement and Routing.
Clock Tree Synthesis. Power routing. SoC integration. Testability of VLSI systems.
SoC examples. DSM (Deep Sub Micron) effects.
SoC power consumption. Power control and power distribution. Low power design.
Communication systems: Bus, Network on Chip (NoC). Shared bus. Crossbar. Network on chip. Deadlock.
System in Package (SiP). Multi-chip modules. Si-based on-chip optical interconnects.
