Objectives The Laboratory of "History, City, Territory" completes the architect's training path with particular attention to the relationship between architecture and urban and territorial surroundings
The student becomes aware that the understanding of the existent, in its different historical phases, is fundamental both for the elaboration of recovery projects and for projects of new architectures.

The Laboratory “History, City and Landscape” consists of two modules, one theoretical (6CFU) and one operating (4 CFU).
In the first module, History of the City and the Territory (6 CFU), the themes of the form and transformations of the historical cities, in their entirety and in their components (urban and architectural), will be studied in relation to the cultural and design models of reference. During the course students will study the methodology for analyzing cities, and the cognitive tools for understanding their generation and evolutionary processes. Particular attention will be paid to examples of the South of Italy.
Programme Module History of the City and Territory (6 ECTS)
Interpretation and analysis of historical cities
- Typical analysis by location, function, periodization
- Constitutive elements and urban poles in relation to settlement and development
- Archival, iconographic and cartographic sources

Introduction to historic cities, with a particular focus on Southern Italy :
- from the ancient city to the modern city



Insights with exercises and seminars:
- Poleis in Magna Graecia;
- Iconography of the city;
- Cartography and perception;
- The South of Italy from the Grand Tour images to the present
- Transformations of downtown as a result of traumatic events:
- The 1783 earthquake in Calabria and the newly founded cities

Objectives The Laboratory of "History, City, Territory" completes the architect's training path with particular attention to the relationship between architecture and urban and territorial surroundings
The student becomes aware that the understanding of the existent, in its different historical phases, is fundamental both for the elaboration of recovery projects and for projects of new architectures.

In the operating module, Critical Analysis of Settlements and Cities (4 CFU), envisages an in-depth analysis of the dynamics of settlements and physical transformations of a historic downtown or a significant territory, whose modes of formation and transformation will be interpreted through the sources historical, cartographic and iconographic.
