Objectives Considering the principles of historical buildings conservation, the Course will provide critical and technical tools for the elaboration of a project of reinforcement of historical buildings, with particular attention to traditional building materials and constructive techniques and to methods of reinforcement in seismic areas. In particular, students will learn the criteria for the correct interpretation of the static behaviour of historical buildings, of the main causes of structural damage, and also the main techniques for strengthening these buildings. The methods for historical building reinforcement are conceived within a critic and technical process which, starting from a rigorous study of the building itself, involves the identification of damage and the related reasons which caused them, and the evaluation of technical interventions, also in relation to compatibility with the existing structures.
Programme
The course is organized in lectures, seminars and practical work to verify the evolution of the project which the professor assigns to each group of students; the course, in fact, includes a practical part which consists of the elaboration of a project of reinforcement of the assigned case study.

Objectives Architectural Restoration is a complex subject, which gathers together founding theoretical issues and high-tech aspects. The course of Wood Preservation with the main objective of providing basic knowledge on insect pests of wood and museum artefacts. The Course also deals with strategies for insect pests management and prevention of attacks while respecting the environment.
Programme Course of Wood Preservation:
The following topics will be studied:
General information on the class of insects; origin and affinities with other arthropods; economic importance and distribution; systematic classification;
- Morphology. Anatomy and post-embryonic development (outline). Adults;
- Biological cycles of insect. Spread of the species. Ecology of insects. Insects and environmental conditions for the preservation and display of artefacts;
- Insect Systematics of artefacts and wood. The species of wood-boring insects harmful and their ecology;
- Means and methods of control of pests, Chemical control , biological control and integrated pest management;
- Other animals harmful to artefacts and materials;
- Micro-organisms and fungi (Wood decay);
- Practical work in LEEA Laboratory

Objectives The teaching course of Materials Science for Restoration deals with the relationships between nature, structure, composition, technology, properties and durability of common building materials. The acquisition of this knowledge is a necessary tool for a conscious choice of the materials to be selected and to be used for the restoration of the historical buildings and the recovery of the modern concrete one.
Programme The structure of atom, primary and secondary bonds, molecules, compounds and related behaviour and properties. Structure and organization of solids. Properties and behaviour of materials. Ancient building materials: unfired clay, stones, plasters, limes, hydraulic limes and related mortars, bricks, wood, glass, iron, copper and alloys. Traditional and advanced ceramic materials. Modern hydraulic binders. Cement mortars, concrete. Ferrous metal materials: iron and steel. Non-ferrous metals:zinc, copper and their alloys, aluminum. Polymers, resins and plastic materials. Composite materials. Environmental degradation causes alteration of stones, bricks, plasters. Decay of cement mortars and concrete. Corrosion of metallic materials. Deterioration of wood and plastics. Moisture infiltration, moisture condensation and rising damp. Surfaces cleaning: methods, technologies and monitoring. Consolidation, reconstruction and protection: materials and technologies. Concrete restoration: principles, materials and technologies.
