Objectives Main aims:
The course is aimed to give skills useful to analyse and study the forest ecosystems, in order to be able in defining and selecting the best forest management practices in different forest environments. The silvicultural options learned should be aimed to protect the forest biodiversity, however improving the productive function.

EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS
Knowledges and learning skills:
Acquire the basic knowledges useful for forest management and planning, in the context of the sustainable forest management.

Application of the acquired knowledges and skills:
The student should be able to apply the skills acquired in realizing forest management plans, taking into account the environmental sustainability.

Independent judgment:
The student should be able to select and apply the best forest practices in relation to the specific forest structural features; he/she should also consider the needs of the local stakeholders.

Communication skills:
The student have to be able in finding and explaining the best solutions to be applied, in order to improve the forest stand conditions. Furthermore, the student have to acquire skills for demonstrating his/her ability to clearly explain the results obtained during his/her work.

Learning abilities:
The student have to be able in attending classes on topics regarding the forest management and planning.
Programme Forest Ecology and management
Definition of the ecology. Abiotic and biotic factors. The human role as ecological factor. Environmental factors: solar irradiation and its variations, plant adaptation to solar irradiation. Atmosphere: Air pressure, temperature and its variations in relation to the latitude. Orographic factors. Effects of the temperature on the plant communities. Wind: effects on the plant communities. Water basins: Evaporation and transpiration, precipitations and pluviometric regimes. The climate: climatic classification at a global scale. Microclimates in forest ecosystems. Ecosystems: structures and functions. Biomes across the world. Forest ecosystems and climate change. The state of the forests across the world: state and trends. Silviculture: definitions. Tree growth in relation to the environmental factors. Forest ecology and management. Forest stand description: site condition, structural complexity, horizontal and vertical structure. Sustainable forest management: criteria and indicators. Forest management and biodiversity. Deadwood and microhabitat as biodiversity indicators. High forests and coppices. Modality of thinning: coppices with and without standards, conversions to high forest, thinning from above, thinning from below, coltural thinning. Field activities in forest ecosystems will be part of the course.
