The Master's Degree Program in Civil Engineering aims to form engineers with a solid multidisciplinary preparation and a high degree of specialization in the field of hydraulic and maritime structures, of structural system design and of infrastructures. To achieve this goal, the Civil Engineering Master's Degree Course offers characterizing and complementary/integrative academic disciplines.

The Scientific-Disciplinary sectors (SSD - Settori Scientifico-Disciplinari) of the involved learning activities are: Hydraulics (ICAR/01), Hydraulic and marine constructions and hydrology (ICAR/02), Highways, railways and airports (ICAR/04), Transportation (ICAR/05), Geotechnics (ICAR/07), Structural mechanics (ICAR/08), Structural engineering (ICAR/09) and Building design (ICAR/10).

The Scientific-Disciplinary sectors of the complementary/integrative disciplines are: Sanitary and environmental engineering (ICAR/03), Mathematical physics (MAT/07) and Numerical analysis (MAT/08).

In addition, activities aimed to develop and write a thesis/dissertation, to be discussed during a final exam, complete the Master's Degree Program.

The specific objectives of Civil Engineering Master's Degree Program are reported in the following:

  • knowledge of mathematical methodologies used to solve civil engineering problems also by means of numerical calculation;
  • knowledge aimed at the attainment of specific ability in solving problems of hydraulic engineering, including pipeline and aqueducts, and marine hydraulic constructions;
  • knowledge of the methods used for dimensioning and verifying vertical wall dams and gravity offshore structures and for the defense of the coasts against wave action;
  • knowledge of the main methods used for the calculation of stress and strain of structures;
  • ability to analyze building systems in their constructive and functional aspects;
  • theoretical and practical knowledge regarding the organization and technical-economic management of construction sites and systems for infrastructures;
  • expertise in the exploitation of  design criteria for railways and airport infrastructures;
  • knowledge of the response of soil to static and dynamic strain;
  • expertise in analysis, design and construction of shallow and deep foundations and knowledge of their interaction with the soil;
  • knowledge of the approaches for geotechnical consolidation of the constructions, for slopes stabilization and improvement of the properties of soil;
  • expertise in geotechnical characterization of the territory.

The expected objectives and the awaited level of gained proficiency are meant to provide graduates with the sufficient skills to apply for jobs in the field of civil engineering, or to continue   studies in either Master or PhD courses.
