The
conservation of the environment, primary production, and the new
frontiers of biotechnologies are at the centre of the study
options of this Faculty, which is noted for its attention to the
globalization processes which have changed the old concept of
agriculture.
There is close collaboration
between the Aspromonte National Park, an exceptional natural
laboratory which compliments the various laboratories on the
campus at Feo di Vito. The extensive library, the up-to-date
facilities, and the excellent student/lecturer ratio, completes
the image of a Faculty which offers very good prospects for the
employment market.

This is the
Faculty with the longest history; it specializes particularly in
Urban Planning and its interests range from studies on the
local and Calabrian situation – the study and rehabilitation of
ancient towns – to the wider horizons of Mediterranean countries
– for example the conservation of oases and historic
settlements.
Faculty life is
marked by intense activity and production of publications led by
a highly qualified teaching staff. Studies on the planning phase
of construction range from a Degree course in Architectural and
Urban Planning Techniques to a second level Master course in
the Architecture and Archaeology of the towns of the Classical
period. The modern structures of the Faculty include multimedia
and language laboratories and various specialist laboratories.

This is the
most recent of the faculties and has registered an exceptionally
high number of enrolments.
In addition to
the Degree Course in Legal Studies the students are offered the
chance to complete their training by means of the School of
Specialization in the legal professions, a library, and a
website which provides various services such as online exam
enrolment and consultation of teaching schedules.

The Faculty of
Engineering is forward looking and offers a second level master
in Biomedical Engineering (in collaboration with the city
hospitals), Environmental Engineering, and a Maritime
Laboratory for the Study of wave motion with the technical
support of the University laboratories. In addition to the
traditional courses on building and infrastructure, there are
important courses on the telecommunication network and
electronic commerce in collaboration with research bodies and
major organizations such as Enel and Telecom.

The
Church of “Santa Maria di Terreti” dates from this period; it
was damaged by the 1908 earthquake, and some of its remains are
preserved in the church of the “Ottimati” and in the National
Museum of Magna Graecia. From the XII century onwards the city
was subjected to Swabian, Angevin and Aragonese domination. In
the XVI century it came under Spanish rule until the War of the
Spanish Succession which brought about the end of the
viceroyalty. Then began the period of Burbon domination which
continued, with brief interruptions (the Napoleonic occupation),
until 1861; in this year the Peninsula was united as the Kingdom
of Italy.

the “Philosopher’s head”. As previously stated Reggio Calabria
is a city on the sea. The seaside esplanade, described by the
Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio as the “finest mile in Italy”,
faces the island of Sicily and offers one of the most important
botanical gardens with a variety of tropical plants and India
rubber trees (Ficus Elastica) which are nearly a century old.
Behind the city rises the Aspromonte massif , which reaches 1800
metres and includes the skiing centre of Gambarie. Moving north
along the coast you come to Scilla, linked to the Homeric legend.
This is an ancient fishing village; the harbour area is known as
Chianalea, which is the oldest and most picturesque quarter. It
is built in the shadow of the rock rising from the sea and is
very well preserved. In the upper part of the town there is the
castle of the Ruffo di Calabria family built on the rock facing
the Straits. The climate is typically Mediterranean but also
displays microclimatic variations due to its particular
geographical situation where different meteorological zones –
the Ionian and Tyrrhenian zones and the Sicilian Straits - come
together. The city has excellent transport connections to the
rest of the world by means of the rail network (it is the
terminus of one of the main Italian rail routes, that between
Rome and Reggio Calabria), the road network ( the A3
Salerno-Reggio Calabria Motorway), the domestic Straits Airport
situated a mile or two from the city centre, and the ferry and
hydrofoil links to Sicily. The University Campus is in the Feo
di Vito district on a hill overlooking the port. 
(State
University Institute of Architecture) was set up with Doctor
Francesco Pontorieri at its head. In 1972 the University symbol
was chosen taking inspiration from the oldest gold coin in the
National Museum in Reggio Calabria: it is the head of the Nemean
lion dating from 400 b.C. The transformation of the I.U.S.A.
into a state University was brought about by a law passed in
1982: the new Faculties of Engineering and Agricultural Science
were set up in Reggio Calabria , while associated Faculties of
Medecine and Law were created in Catanzaro.
