Researchers' Night 2020

Long live coverage, internationally renowned guests and discussions with researchers close the 2020 edition of the "SuperScienceMe - Research is your R-Evolution" Researchers' Night.
A dizzying following, more than 2500 visitors registered at its start and an ever increasing number with the passing of the hours, for the entirely digital edition of the event which involved the Università degli Studi della Calabria, Università degli Studi Magna Graecia di Catanzaro, Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, Università degli Studi della Basilicata, CNR (istituti ITM, IIA, ICAR, IIT, ISAC, IMAA, ISM, ISPC) and Regione Calabria in a journey through time between experiments and demonstrations dedicated to different groups of listeners.

A real "Time Travel", from the past to the future and vice versa, which transferred knowledge on the scientific evolution carried out within the university laboratories, provided important information on European, national and regional funding programs with the help of dedicated corners.

Great satisfaction was expressed by the Magnificent Rector, Prof. Santo Marcello Zimbone, who complimented the results obtained, underlining that the future of the world is in the hands of research, research is the support of production activities, of innovation .. . research is the engine of society and is finally emerging in all its facets ”.

Three conducted by our university, presented by Dr. Luciano Zingali, took us on a journey back in time, from the future to the past, a journey into science that began with the intervention of Prof. Valerio Scordamaglia: an interesting leap into future between robotics, artificial intelligence and science fiction cinema, dragging us into a world where, perhaps, reality could surpass fantasy; we arrived at a contemporary age with the experiments and measurements carried out in the Renew-Mel Laboratory, on the Reggio Calabria seafront, where Prof. Fabio Filianoti explained the importance of our sea as a resource for renewable energy and the development of new technologies able to generate resources from the strait currents.
Virtual experiments and 3D printing took us back to the past with an interesting archival research that gave rise to the three-dimensional reconstruction of the church of San Giorgio al Corso, the result of the PhD thesis in Architecture by Dr. Francesco De Lorenzo and the reconstruction of the ancient facade of the Cathedral of Reggio Calabria, before the 1908 earthquake, the subject of an interesting degree thesis conducted by the student Alfredo Bevacqua.

A journey into the history of science that ended with the Science Show, the Pitch challenge between 14 researchers, from the Universities and Research Centers of Calabria and Basilicata, to discover the best science communicator.
The award for the best presentation went to prof. Francesco Mauriello, of the DICEAM Department, with the "Watch" project on the recycling of organic waste, followed, in second place, by Prof. Martina Bevacqua, of the DIIES department with the "Breast-MWI" project relating to an innovative tool for breast cancer diagnosis and the deserved sixth place of Dr. Antonia Russo, PhD student in Computer Engineering of DIIES with the project "Privacy & E-health".

An event, therefore, which saw the Mediterranean University as a great protagonist!

SuperScienceMe continues on where it will be possible to board the "Time Machine" and embark on a journey to discover the University's laboratories.
The web platform will remain usable for schools and for all those who want to know more about university research.
