Principal aims

The Laboratory of Pure and Applied Mathematics supports the scientific research of the DICEAM Department aimed at enhancing the interdisciplinary scientific debate about mathematical models describing the physical behaviour of complex materials, both micro- and nano-structured.

The projects and the application issues promoted and developed in the Laboratory, include several engineering problems, such as soil stability under seismic conditions, landslides of exceptional characteristics, propagation of pollutants in the subsoil, thermo-mechanical behaviour of soils, propagation of seismic waves in sedimentary basins, propagation of acceleration waves in porous and / or granular media; further studies concern the nematic liquid crystals dynamics, and modelling of tumoral growth in avascular phase.

Periodically the Laboratory organizes International Symposia where the obtained results are presented and discussed, and contributions are usually published by international editors.

The Laboratory also performs activities of teaching and guidance for schools.


Research activities

The scientific activity carried out in the Laboratory is mainly concerned with the modelling of continuous media with microstructure, the development of mathematical - physics constitutive models for applied sciences, dynamic models for nematic liquid crystals and biological systems. The studies carried out involve thermodynamic models and their validation for porous media, liquid with bubbles, granular materials, diatomic continua, polymers, classic multiphase and / or immiscible mixtures, the dynamic profile of the order tensor for some nematic liquid crystals subjected to mechanical and electrical stresses simulating different experimental conditions, and the modelling of tumour growth in avascular phase in different biological conditions.

The Laboratory organizes regular workshops and research and orientation meetings with high school students, as well teaching and seminar activities under the National Project Alternating Training “Networking with the Mediterranean" – Framework agreement USR Calabria - Mediterranean University. The Laboratory also provides support to the teaching activity of the DICEAM Department with exercises and practical demonstrations.
