Objectives To provide competencies on: analytical and methodological tools for the study of problems pertaining to water protection and for the production of hydroelectric energy; design solutions to mitigate flood risk; development of a plan for flood control in areas prone to flooding; design of hydroelectric plants.
Programme The propagation of flood waves (2 credits)
De Saint Venant equations and solution methods.
Localized phenomena:
Hydraulic jump;
Hydraulic problems of the bridges;
bridges scour;
Hydraulic problems of manholes.
Sediment transport and sampling methods.
Erosion of river basins.

Flood risk and mitigation (2 credits)
Definition and classification of hydraulic risk.
Gravity dams.
Embankment dams.
Spillways and diversions.
Retention basins.
Inline structures.
Bank stabilization.
Embankments.
Works in the context of river crossings.
Works for water waste in urban areas (gutters, ditches, drains).

Numerical modeling applied to fluvial hydraulics (1 credit)
One-dimensional and multi-dimensional models of flood propagation.
Hydrological models.
Application of the code HEC-RAS for hydraulic analyzes.
Application of HEC-HMS code for the determination of the design hydrograph.

Hydroelectric plants (1 credit)
Classification and design criteria.
Characteristic elements:
Barrages upstream (sleepers, dams);
Gates and spillways;
Diversion channel;
Charge Basins;
Penstocks;
Production plant;
Turbine;
Tailrace.

Programme 1. INTRODUCTION TO WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS, WATER BUDGET, WATER SUPPLY AND TANKS (1 CREDIT)
• Main facilities and classification of pipilines for water supply.
• Introduction to the current legislation.
• Water characteristics and drinking water quality.
• Water budget: water use, trends, peak coefficients and dual systems.
• Design discharge for water distribution systems.
• Water resources.
• Spring water. Structures for the exploitation of the water surface resource.
• Ground water table: phreatic and artesian wells.
• Tanks: classification, building details and hydraulic infrastructures.
• Tank placement. Water distribution networks with upstream and downstream tanks.
• Tanks Compensation effects of tanks and reservoirs. Design of the size of the tanks for surplus and deficit behaviours.
• Design of tanks for towns.
• Building features of tanks.

2. DESIGN OF PIPE NETWORK (1 CREDIT)
• Basic hydraulics: flow regimes and pipe head-loss formulas.
• Design of appropriate pipe system as a function of the elevation.
• Economic criterion of design applied to water systems for multiple material pipeline: for a n-pipes inflowing and m-pipes outflowing node made by different materials.
• Simulation and analytical solution of gravity-based branched pipelines.
• Design of gravity pipelines: tracks and pipe sizing.
• Pipe materials and characteristics. Current legislation.
• Choice of pipes.
• Pipes joints.
• Pipe layout and testing.
• Pipe facilities: blow-holes, drains, valves, discharge meters.

3. WATER DISTRIBUTION NETWORK (1 CREDIT)
• Water distribution systems classification: branched and looped networks, multiple loops or mixed systems.
• Distribution design; level of service.
• Design of looped and branched networks.
• Design of a mixed system based on a single loop.
• Hardy-Cross method: 1) head-loss balance; 2) discharge balance.
• Solution based on hydraulic constraints, which make the problem balanced.
• Remote control and water system rehabilitation.
