Objectives The course deals with the analysis of the building's thermal loads and of the dimensioning of heating and air-conditioning systems. Moreover, solar thermal systems are also treaties.
Programme Basic concepts of mechanic of fluids and heat transfer. Psychrometry. Psychrometric chart. Basic transformation on moist air. Climatic data for design of thermal plants. Outdoor air temperature. Solar paths. Solar radiation intensity. Sol-air temperature.

Thermo-physical characteristics of the buildings. Buildings as thermodynamic systems. Heat propagation: steady and transient states. Parameters influencing transient state of a building. Thermo-physical properties of opaque and transparent elements. Thermal inertia.
Energy balance of a building. Buildings heat losses. Heat exchanges by transmission through opaque surfaces, transparent surfaces and towards the ground. Heat exchange by ventilation. Buildings thermal loads in winter and summer regime.

Typologies of heating and cooling systems. Components of heating systems: furnaces, chimneys, heating terminal, circulation pumps, expansion tanks, heat meters. Components of air conditioning systems: filters, air treatment units, heaters, chillers, fans, grilles and diffusers.

Heat pumps. Typologies: water-water, water-to-air, air-to-air. Components of an heat pump. Performance indices of heat pumps. Use of heat pumps in residential sector. Dimensioning of an heat pump.

Distributed and concentrated pressure losses. Water distribution networks. Design of water distribution networks. Air distribution networks. Design of air distribution ducts.

System of conversion of solar energy in heat energy. Flat-Plate Solar Collectors and Evacuated Tube Solar Collectors. Water and air systems. Heat balance of a solar collector. Determination of the optimal surface of the collector. F-chart method. Dimensioning of storage volume. (1 ECTS)
