Objectives The course contributes to the definition of general and basic knowledge required for the first year of a five-year course and is in the formative process of the student, a first contribution to the culture of the project and a first response to the need to repair the separation between time and ideational moment of realization.
On the operational side, its contents and its articulation are dedicated to the critical analysis of the material constitution of the building, understood as a central element and at the same time, a metaphor of the processes of transformation of the environment, in order to solve the needs and the housing needs of man.
The course belongs to the traditional disciplinary and large body of studies of Architecture and, for some years, is inserted in a scientific context heavily renovated and constantly evolving area of Architectural Technology, whose purpose is the study of the processes of realization in architecture. It 'a sector with its original contributions can give a lot to the formation of the architect, here we will say that the building materials and their technologies for production and employment are the central element of the construction of' artificial environment, one of the determinants of building production and realization processes, accordingly, the discipline that studies them has a leading position within the area of Architectural Technology and a supporting role transverse with respect to all other disciplines that make up the area and the wider rule of the project.
Programme
The issues addressed and the educational aims can be expressed through the following aphorisms:
1) To address the design, in architecture as in any other sector, we must understand: the goals you want to achieve, you have the means, the characters of the context in which it operates.
2) The study of material technologies identified essentially with the knowledge of the means of their production cycle and their place in the building process of the final product.
3) The architect must consider the problem of the relationship between the architectural organism as a whole, its components, characteristics of the natural environment and the socio-technical context in which it is placed.
4) In designing we must know the characteristics of the materials, in relation to the problems of stability, protection and durability that the parties are called upon to carry out building.
5) The building is a structured set of parts which, though otherwise characterised, must be considered agents in an interactive way.
6) For every "problem" place to designer only exceptionally corresponds a single technical solution and the central problem of designing is to choose among the possible solutions.
7) The relationship between architectural form and construction technique is not fixed, nor uniquely oriented and binding.
8) The material choices and related techniques are never neutral for the environment, it is necessary to assess their impact, considering the life cycle of materials, from their production to their use, at their disposal.
9) It is not correct to keep distinct the purposes of architecture from the formal possibilities to realize them through the material, its characteristics and its language, and this is true even when the material is not asked to express clearly its "truth."
10) The technical choices and the results do not depend on architectural materials individual actions, such as, more generally, creativity and innovation in architecture, depend on collective action and collaborative, within which the architect plays a role, sometimes maieutic, necessarily co-ordination and synthesis.

SYNTHETIC DESCRIPTION OF THE TEACHING AND TRAINING OBJECTIVES
The course contributes to the definition of the general and basic knowledge required for the I and II years of the five-year course of the Degree in Architecture and represents a Discipline preparatory to the technical control and construction of the Architecture project.
On the operational level, its contents and its structure are dedicated to the critical analysis of the material constitution of the building.
The course belongs to the disciplinary area of Architectural Technology, whose purpose is the study of the realization processes in Architecture. A sector that with its original contributions can give much to the training of the architect designer; where the building materials and the related production and use technologies represent the central element of the realization of the architectural artefact, a determining and central factor in the realization of the Environmental Transformation Processes
Consequently, within the articulation of the Training Path aimed at defining and constructing the Architect's profession, the discipline that investigates them and examines them takes on a prominent position, assuming a transversal support role, with respect to all other disciplines that make up the area and the wider domain of the project.

PREREQUISITES
Being Materials for Architecture, a teaching placed in the first year, does not require prerequisites.
The course provides all the knowledge and tools necessary to be able to address the topics of the topics indicated.

COURSE PROGRAM
Materials for Architecture is the captivating phrase that outlines the scenario of disciplinary culture and within which is articulated the Formative Path that outlines and declines the element of design intelligence that has always governed the process through which the architectural thought becomes built.
A jumble of knowledge and knowledge that structures the body of choices that the Project assumes, so that its Form conquers concreteness.
In this sense, the topics dealt with and the didactic aims can be expressed through the assumption of the following assumptions
1) The current issues related to the energy crisis, climate change, depletion of natural resources, increasing levels of pollution and waste production are transforming some features of the evolutionary dynamics of our society and, therefore, among them also those related to the processes of Transformation of the Anthropic and Natural Space which, in this sense, are oriented to assume and promote the dissemination and the assumption of new processes and new practices.
2) To the previous assumption, therefore, the necessary consideration of the fact that the teaching, the deepening and the study of the Materials and the Techniques, must be interrelated to the increased construction of a mature and actual, sensitive Culture of Awareness is clearly implied. , able to move, appropriately, around the themes of the relationship between Sustainability, Development and the consequent compatible transformation of space.
3) Study the technologies of materials, identifying this study with the knowledge of the means, their production cycle and their placement in the realization process of the final good.
4) Consider in a priority way: the study of the relationships existing between the architectural organism, its components and the characteristics of the Contexts, Socio-Technical and Natural in which it is located, fitting harmoniously
5) Define a path of knowledge of the characteristics of the materials, in relation to the problems of stability, protection and duration that the building parts are called to carry out.
6) Characterize the study of architectural artifacts as structured sets of parts that, although differently characterized, must be considered agents interactively.
7) Build an approach to material and technical choices related to the consideration of environmental characteristics, evaluating their impact, considering the life cycle of materials, from their production to their use, to their disposal.
8) Build a mindset where the formal aims of architecture are not distinguished from the possibility of realizing them through the material, its characteristics and its language.

EXPECTED RESULTS (acquisition of knowledge by the student)
In relation to the topics covered, students are required to carry out exercises and partial checks, according to deadlines to be specified. To support these activities, didactic material will be provided in advance, with specific bibliographies, bibliographic records, fact sheets on technological systems, anthological material, etc.
The year check, aimed at the certification of the 6 credits provided, consists of an interview, a reconsideration of the partial evaluations and the evaluation of the elaborates produced during the year and enclosed in a Personal Book and related to the deepening of the following topics
1. MONOGRAPHIC STUDIES ON BUILDING MATERIALS
2. CONSTRUCTION / ENVIRONMENT REPORT
3. THE BUILDING / SOIL REPORT
4. THE BUILDING / STRUCTURE REPORT
5. REALIZATION ASPECTS AND CONSTRUCTION SITE

Definitions, classifications, and historical systematization of materials, techniques of use and factors of production; critical principles and references to project and construction processuality:
- materials culture and design culture: relationships between matter and form;
- materials in the history of architecture;
- materials and evolution of production factors;
- knowledge of materials as a constitutive factor of the building process;
The Science of Materials as a cognitive support
The science of materials as an essential cognitive support for understanding their behavior and their use in construction; relationship between constructive principles and design choices; references to the needs of performance and the principles of eco-sustainability:
- the paths of information on materials;
- the nature of the materials;
- the "quality" of construction materials; the objectives of environmental well-being and eco-sustainability of choices; analysis and comparisons between alternative construction solutions (classifications, characteristics, performances; from the technical solution in accordance with the construction element);
- the physical and technical problems of the confined environment; environmental conditioning for human well-being;
- the physical behavior of building materials, in relation to environmental requirements;
- materials and technological solutions with low impact, reuse, recycling;
- comparison building materials (classifications, characteristics, performances);
The module will end with tests and other checks on the achieved acquisition levels.
The Construction of Architecture
Relationships between housing, materials, construction techniques, and architectural form; appropriate technologies, durability, reliability and maintainability problems:
- the building organization as a system of functions;
- the constituent elements of the constructive organism;
- the construction process;
- other classifications of the constructive apparatus, with reference to industrialized processes;
- the construction process (workability of the material; ways and means to carry out the construction)
- design criteria, taking into account functional, duration and conservation requirements

INDEPENDENT STUDENT WORK
The student will have to study the topics dealt with in the lectures on the recommended texts and summarize them through personal elaborations that summarize them (graphic elaborations; Texts; photographic documentation; summary and summary sheets).

METHOD OF VERIFICATION OF LEARNING
In relation to the topics covered in the indicated cycles, students are required to carry out exercises and partial verifications, according to deadlines to be specified.
To support these activities, didactic material will be provided in advance, with specific bibliographies, bibliographic-type forms, fact sheets on technological systems, anthological material, etc.
The year verification, aimed at the certification of the 6 credits provided, consists of an interview, a reconsideration of the partial evaluations and the evaluation of the works produced during the year, summarized in writings, graphics, photographic documentation, etc., enclosed in a Personal Book.
The book will be a sort of Portfolio, produced in direction, containing indications on the training path followed
More in detail, it is envisaged that it can be articulated according to the following structure:
- Notes, with summary sheets, comparison tables and graphs, according to specific guide indexes.
- Monographic studies on the materials studied: The production of cards on the investigated materials related to the evolution of the material in the history of architecture is expected; evolution of production factors; relationships between matter and form; quality of the material; physical behavior of the material in relation to environmental needs; ecological nature of the material: energy flows and material cycles.
- Graphic drawings with drawings, comments and annotations; using "official" graphic conventions concerning the theoretical deconstruction of a theoretical building. The elaboration of various technical alternatives is foreseen, deduced from the manuals and from the production sector.
The work will be individual and, in part, produced in the classroom.
The checks will take place periodically, based on scheduled progress; the partial checks can be translated into "credits" useful for the purposes of the exam.
