Objectives The course aims to provide the methodological and operational tools to deal with the intervention project on built, stimulating reflection on the theoretical foundations of the architectural restoration discipline and dealing with the stresses and demands of the new use.Theme of the course is the project of the architectural heritage conservation. The goal of the course, therefore, is to offer the student a method of approach to the artefact to be preserved which interpreters, through careful historical research and an accurate survey of the geometry, the building phases, which will analyze and explain the phenomena degradation also in relation to their historical evolution, which culturally justify the necessary protective measures, and finally not envisage a compatible reuse. Particular attention will be paid to accessibility of the historic buildings.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING CAPACITY: acquisition of the reading skills of the historical building in its formal and material architectural features;
CAPACITY OF developing diagnoses by identifying the phenomena of deterioration and instability and proposing methods of restoration. CAPACITY of integration between the theoretical foundations of the restoration, the operational problems of the restoration project connected to the knowledge of the materials constituting the historic buildings and design solutions.
Programme 1 . GUIDELINES FOR THE RESTORATION , the main theoretical positions in the ongoing debate in relation to some issues closely related to the project : authenticity , minimal intervention , reversibility, reuse , accessibility; historical knowledge and project;
2 READING BUILDING AND ITS STRATIFICATION: historical research (archival, bibliographic, iconographic), the graph pad, photo detection, reading stratigraphy;
3. READING AND ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURE AND MATERIALS: SURVEY OF THE STATE OF FACT: Degradi AND INSTABILITY (UNI11182/2006)

Objectives The theoretical foundations of the discipline will be outlined starting from the definition of restoration and conservation over the years. The goal is to gain full mastery of the principles of conservation and restoration by specifically analyzing the themes related to the concept of monument heritage and cultural good in a chronological sense.
Programme The course of theory of restoration will address the following topics:
-Introduction to architectural restoration. relationships with other disciplines. terminological issues.
-Significance and role of the monument in the pre-modern tradition. The Middle Ages: continuity, detachment, knowledge of the ancient. Rebirth and restoration of antiquity in the sixteenth century: the attitude towards the Middle Ages. The religious renewal and attention to the Christian antiquities in the second five hundred. Developments in the Baroque age.
-The birth of the Modern restoration: the eighteenth century.
The restoration in painting and sculpture: Patina, authenticity and reversibility; The figure of the restorer and the role of scholars: L. Crespi; B. Cavaceppi and J.J. Winckelmann; P. Edwards in Venice.
-Restoration, Archaeology, Neoclassicism: The Experiences on ancient monuments in Rome and Italy in the early nineteenth century.
The legislation and the organization of the protection in the Italian pre-unitary states.
-Protection and conservation in France. The Museum of A. Lenoir. The positions of A.-Ch. Quatremère de Quincy. The "empirical" phase of the restoration. The activity of the Commission des Monuments historiques and the formation of the principles of stylistic restoration.
