Objectives Acquisition of knowledge on the Fundamentals of electromagnetics including transmission lines, time varying fields, plane waves, radiation.
Programme The electromagnetic field: Maxwell Equations; constitutive equations in electromagnetism; Lorentz Force; charge conservation.
Circuital theory of transmission lines: telegrapher's equations; wave equations; TE, TM, TEM modes; voltage, current, resistance, inductance, capacitance, conductance, characteristic impedance, propagation constant, attenuation constant and phase constant of transmission lines; reflection coefficient; the maximum power transfer theorem and its applications; voltage standing wave ratio; lossy transmission lines.
Plane waves: plane waves as the fundamental solution of Maxwell Equations; electromagnetic field polarization; Snell's laws; Fresnel equations; total internal reflection and critical angle; total refraction and Brewster's angle.
Radiating systems basics: electromagnetic potentials; Hertzian dipole; dipole antennas; fundamental antenna parameters.
