Objectives The course aims to introduce the basics of telecommunication networks design and evaluation, mainly through laboratory experience. It aims at presenting the essential concepts related to the methodologies for the design and evaluation of networks from the configuration of parameters and testing of devices, to the performance evaluation through simulation tools. The main existing evaluation and testing methodologies will be presented (experimental platforms, simulators, emulators, numerical and analytical models), then, some of them will be used (e.g., traffic generators, network protocol analyzers, network simulators/emulators, utilities for connectivity configuration and testing of network nodes/embedded devices) during lab exercises on open source software platforms/tools and operating systems.

Kernel and Linux distribution. Shell. File handling and directory management. File permissions and features. Shell scripting: an overview
Configuration and analysis of telecommunication networks
Techniques and open-source tools for the set-up and configuration of (IP) network interfaces over Linux devices. Remote connections set-up (e.g., ssh).
Protocol Analyzers (e.g., tcpdump, Wireshark).
TCP/UDP traffic generation open source software for IP networks performance analysis (e.g., iperf).
Tools and software models for the analysis and implementation of networks and telecommunications protocols.
Discrete event simulators (e.g., Network Simulator).
Post-processing tools for results evaluation. Network emulators (e.g., Mininet).
