Objectives Synthetic description:
The course aims to provide information on environmental aspects of geotechnics.

Acquisition of knowledge on:
Italian environmental regulation. Effects of soil compaction on clayey soils and methods of construction and compaction control. Knowledge and ability to determine hydraulic conductivity of soils through in situ and in laboratory tests. Knowledge of the essential elements of a landfill. Design of the bottom liners and of cover systems of a landfill. Knowledge of leachate and biogas collection systems. The mechanical behaviour of municipal solid wastes. Evaluation of landfill stability. Knowledge of control and monitoring systems of a landfill. In addition, the course provides students with knowledge concerning contaminants transport and knowledge on the main methods of site characterization and remediation or containment systems of contaminated sites.

2. Compaction methods
Compaction laboratory tests. Effects of compaction on the behaviour of cohesive soils. In situ compaction. Control of compaction process.

3. Laboratory and in situ tests to determine soils permeability
Evaluation of soil permeability by means of laboratory tests. Compatibility tests in the presence of filtration of contaminated fluids. Evaluation of the soil permeability through in situ tests.

4. Controlled landfills: geotechnical aspects
Site selection, geotechnical characterization. Basic elements of a controlled landfill. Barrier liners. Leachate collection and removal systems. Cover systems. Biogas capture systems. Mechanical behaviour of municipal solid waste. Landfill stability. Monitoring and control systems. Geosynthetics used as barrier layers in landfills construction.

5. Isolation and remediation technologies for contaminated soils: geotechnical aspects
Regulations and recommendations. Contaminants characterization. Contaminants transport in soils: convection, dispersion, diffusion, adsorption. Theoretical and experimental aspects. Site characterization. Concepts of remediation and isolation of contaminated sites. Criteria for the choice of remediation technique to be used in relation to the in situ contamination. Off site treatments. On site. treatments In situ treatments. Isolation of contaminated soils: covering and bottom liners.
