Objectives The course aims to provide knowledge on the processes of corrosion and degradation of the main families of materials. The course provides to deepen the themes of degradation of materials and to indicate the most appropriate technological tools to assess and prevent their effects.
Programme Detailed course program
Definition of degradation and corrosion of materials.
Economy of degradation of materials.
Metals. Corrosion of metallic materials: morphology of corrosion, speed, intensity and types of corrosion. Wet corrosion. Thermodynamic aspects: Nernst equation, voltage electrode potential-pH diagrams (Pourbaix diagrams). Kinetic aspects: characteristic curves voltage/current, polarization. Cathodic and anodic overvoltage. Passivation phenomena and passive conditions. Forms of localized corrosion: selective, under stress and fatigue, for galvanic contact, for turbulence, abrasion, cavitation, etc.. Methods of protection of metallic materials against corrosion. Pre-treatments (thermal, mechanical and chemical) of the surface and its protection by surface coatings: organic and inorganic types (metals or not). Electrical protection: anodic and cathodic protection. Corrosion inhibitors. Corrosion dry: thermodynamic and kinetic aspects.

Ceramics. Main causes of degradation for ceramic materials. Degradation by gases, liquids and solids. Degradation of the glass. Dissolution and homogeneous selective devitrification. Solubility limit. Effect of pH of the solution. Glass fibers. Glass exposed to the atmosphere. Protection of the glass.
Degradation of cementitious materials (mortar, concrete) Durability of concrete: freezing and thawing attack, attack by acids and water, reaction with inert substances (alkali-silica). Carbonation. Preventing degradation of.
Polymers. Main causes of degradation of polymeric materials: attack by solvents, oxidation, degradation by UV rays, heat. Forms of "corrosion" (degradation) of polymers. Influence of the structure in the degradation. Interaction with solvents (swelling and dissolution). Secondary products. Role of the interface. Water absorption. Protection against degradation: additives, stabilizers, antioxidants.
